How to Compare the Best Bank CD Rates and Accounts

It’s always a smart financial move to compare your options when opening a new certificate of deposit account. Small differences in CD rates, compounding schedules, and terms can quickly add up over time—especially if you’re depositing a larger balance.

To ensure you secure the best CD rates for your financial goals, here are the top three features to evaluate:

1. Top CD Interest Rates

The Annual Percentage Yield (APY) is usually the most important feature to savers, and comparing CD interest rates is the fastest way to maximize your returns. However, chasing the highest number isn’t the only factor. A very high interest rate can be completely wiped out if you are forced to pay a penalty fee for withdrawing your funds before the term is complete. When evaluating top bank rate CD rates, always balance the high yield with your personal need for cash liquidity.

2. High Yield CD Term Lengths

Term length goes hand-in-hand with your interest rate. Most banks charge an “early withdrawal penalty” for taking your funds out before the term matures. For example, if you open a 12-month CD but need to withdraw your funds at the 6-month mark, that penalty fee will eat into your earnings.

You need to decide exactly when you’ll need access to these funds again:

  • Short-Term Needs: For any timeline less than a year, we typically recommend a standard high-yield savings account instead.
  • First-Time CD Savers: If this is your first CD, we recommend starting with a 12- to 15-month term. It’s a great sweet spot to lock in excellent rates without tying up your money for too long.
  • Experienced Savers: If you’ve opened CDs in the past, you can confidently build a CD ladder or choose the exact term that fits your unique financial forecast.

3. Minimum Required Initial Deposits

The initial deposit requirement is the final hurdle when opening a CD. Most banks require at least a $500 initial deposit to open an account, while some institutions require significantly more to unlock their absolute highest rate tiers. Because your initial deposit will be locked away, only deposit funds you are absolutely certain you will not need for daily expenses or emergency funds.
