Plan your monthly savings

Choose a target and timeframe. Start with 0% APY to plan without interest.

The total balance you want to reach.
Money available now that you will keep for this goal.
Use a whole number of months. Deposits are made at the end of each month.
Enter 4 for 4%. A positive yield is an assumption and may change.

Find the monthly contribution needed to reach a savings target. Enter your goal, the amount already saved, the number of months available and an assumed annual percentage yield (APY). Start at 0% APY to see the amount you would need without interest.

Key Takeaways

  • Your target, starting balance and time available determine how much you need to save.
  • With $1,000 already saved, reaching $10,000 in 24 months requires $375 a month at 0% APY.
  • An assumed positive APY can lower the estimated contribution, but future interest is uncertain when rates can change.
  • Results assume equal deposits at the end of each month and exclude fees, taxes, withdrawals and bonuses.

How to Use the Savings Goal Calculator

Enter the total balance you want to reach, including money you already have set aside for this goal. Then enter that starting balance and the number of months you plan to save.

Use an APY that fits the scenario you want to explore. Leaving it at 0% gives a plan based entirely on your own deposits. A positive APY adds estimated interest using a constant yield throughout the plan.

The result shows the monthly contribution, total new deposits, estimated interest and projected ending balance. The suggested contribution rounds up to the next cent, so the projected balance can finish slightly above your target.

Try a longer timeframe or a different starting balance to see which monthly amount fits your budget. The tool solves for a contribution; it does not assess whether that contribution is affordable for you.

How Much Do You Need to Save Each Month?

Without interest, subtract what you already have from your target and divide the gap by the number of months:

Monthly savings = (target − starting balance) ÷ months

For a $10,000 goal with $1,000 already saved:

Time availableMonthly contribution at 0% APY
12 months$750.00
18 months$500.00
24 months$375.00
36 months$250.00

These examples assume the starting balance remains available for the goal and every contribution is made. A longer timeframe spreads the same $9,000 gap across more deposits.

How Interest Changes the Plan

Interest can contribute toward your goal alongside your deposits. The calculator converts the APY you enter into an equivalent monthly growth rate; it does not add a second compounding uplift to the APY.

For example, suppose you start with $1,000, aim for $10,000 in 24 months, and assume a hypothetical 4.00% APY throughout. The estimated monthly contribution is $357.81, rounded up to the next cent. Under this model, you would add $8,587.44, earn approximately $412.80 in interest and finish with approximately $10,000.24.

That 4.00% is an illustration, not a current offer or promised return. Compare the result with the $375 monthly contribution at 0% to see how much your plan depends on estimated interest.

How the Savings Goal Calculation Works

For a positive APY, the tool first finds an equivalent monthly rate:

i = (1 + y)¹⁄¹² − 1

Here, y is APY as a decimal. With P as the starting balance, G as the goal, m as the number of months and C as the monthly contribution, the projected ending balance is:

G = P × (1 + i)ᵐ + C × [((1 + i)ᵐ − 1) ÷ i]

The calculator rearranges that equation to find C. At 0% APY, it uses the simpler savings-gap formula above. If your starting balance is already enough—or is projected to reach the target without new deposits—the required monthly contribution is $0 under the assumptions entered.

This is an equal-month planning model. Actual bank interest calculations and deposit dates can produce different results.

Turn the Number Into a Savings Plan

Compare the monthly contribution with your take-home income and regular expenses. Include costs that arrive less often, such as annual bills, so the plan does not rely on money already needed elsewhere. The CFPB's budgeting guidance explains how to account for savings and irregular expenses.

If the amount is too high, try extending the timeframe, reducing the target or adding an initial deposit you can afford. For a concrete starting routine, explore our emergency savings guide.

Once the amount fits, consider a recurring transfer timed around your income and bills. Keep enough money available for upcoming payments; the CFPB's automatic savings guidance explains what to check before setting transfers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use the calculator without assuming interest?

Yes. Enter 0% APY. The result divides the amount still needed by the number of months, without relying on future interest.

Does the calculator use interest rate or APY?

It uses APY. If you only know a stated annual interest rate and compounding schedule, use our APY calculator to convert it first.

What happens if I already have enough saved?

If your starting balance meets or exceeds the goal, the required new contribution is $0. Keep the money available for the goal and review the plan if you make withdrawals or change the target.

Will my savings reach the target exactly?

The projection follows the inputs and assumptions you enter. Actual deposits, changing rates, fees, taxes and withdrawals can change the outcome. Rounding contributions upward may also leave the modeled balance slightly above the target. Revisit your plan as your balance and circumstances change.
