CIT® Bank Platinum Savings is best for savers who can consistently keep at least $5,000 in the account. That balance qualifies the entire account for Platinum Savings' higher interest-rate tier. If the end-of-day balance falls below $5,000, however, the entire balance earns the substantially lower tier instead.
The account requires only $100 to open and has no monthly service fee. In addition, interest compounds daily and is credited monthly. Therefore, Platinum Savings can be an appealing place for an emergency fund, home down payment, or other sizable cash reserve when you expect to stay comfortably above the upper-tier threshold.
The main tradeoff is the rate structure. Savers who routinely move below $5,000 may be better served by an account with a single competitive APY across all balances. CIT Bank is also an online banking division of First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company, so customers should be comfortable managing deposits and transfers digitally rather than relying on a local CIT branch.

How CIT Platinum Savings Works
CIT® Bank Platinum Savings is a variable-rate, tiered savings account. The most important number is the $5,000 balance threshold.
If your end-of-day balance is at least $5,000, your entire account balance earns the upper-tier APY in effect that day. If your balance falls below $5,000, your entire balance earns the lower-tier APY instead. In other words, CIT does not apply one rate to the first $5,000 and another rate only to money above that amount.
This makes the account relatively easy to understand, but it also creates a meaningful rate cliff. Therefore, Platinum Savings is most attractive when $5,000 represents a comfortable floor rather than a balance you will regularly approach or fall below.
The interest rates are variable and can change at CIT Bank's discretion. For that reason, check CIT's current rate disclosure before opening the account rather than relying on a rate quoted in an older review.
CIT Platinum Savings Benefits
A competitive upper-tier savings rate
The main appeal of Platinum Savings is its upper balance tier. Customers who maintain at least $5,000 can qualify their entire account balance for CIT's higher Platinum Savings APY.
That structure can work particularly well for a larger emergency fund or other cash reserve that you do not expect to spend down frequently. However, because savings rates change, compare CIT with other high-yield savings accounts before opening an account.
Only $100 is required to open the account
You do not need $5,000 simply to open Platinum Savings. CIT's minimum opening deposit is $100.
The distinction matters: $100 opens the account, while $5,000 currently determines whether you qualify for the higher rate tier. Therefore, somebody can open Platinum Savings with a smaller amount, but the account becomes much less compelling if the balance remains below the upper-tier threshold.
No monthly service fee
CIT does not charge an account-opening fee or monthly service fee for Platinum Savings. In addition, standard online transfers and incoming wire transfers currently carry no CIT fee.
Certain less-common services can still cost money. For example, CIT's current fee schedule allows a fee for domestic outgoing wires when the account balance is below its fee-waiver threshold. Consequently, customers who regularly use wires should check the latest fee schedule before initiating one.
Interest compounds daily
Platinum Savings earns interest on the entire daily balance. CIT compounds interest daily and credits it monthly.
Daily compounding is useful, but the APY already incorporates compounding. Therefore, when comparing savings accounts, focus on the APY and qualification rules rather than assuming daily compounding alone makes one account superior.
No monthly transaction-count limit
CIT's current account agreement lists an unlimited number of transactions per month for Platinum Savings. That makes the account more flexible than older savings-account rules that limited certain withdrawals or transfers to six per statement cycle.
However, unlimited transactions do not mean unlimited transfer amounts. CIT separately reserves the right to impose per-transfer, daily, and rolling seven-day dollar limits on its external transfer service.
Multiple ways to move money
Customers can fund Platinum Savings through electronic transfers, wire transfers, mailed checks, and eligible mobile check deposits. Account management is available through CIT's website and mobile app.
One timing detail is especially useful to understand. If you use CIT's system to pull an ACH deposit from another bank, CIT currently places a five-business-day hold on those deposited funds. By contrast, an ACH deposit initiated from the outside institution is available when CIT receives it.
FDIC insurance through First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company
CIT Bank is a division of First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company, an FDIC-insured bank. Eligible deposits are federally insured up to applicable limits for each depositor and ownership category.
However, CIT Bank and First Citizens are the same insured institution for FDIC purposes. Therefore, if you already hold deposits through First Citizens, include those balances when determining how much FDIC coverage you have within the same ownership category.
CIT Platinum Savings Drawbacks
The lower balance tier is the biggest drawback
The account's strongest feature can also be its biggest weakness. If your end-of-day balance falls below $5,000, the entire balance moves into Platinum Savings' lower interest-rate tier.
This is not a fee or financial penalty. Nevertheless, the lower tier has historically been much less competitive than the upper tier. As a result, this account is a poor fit if your balance frequently moves above and below $5,000.
CIT is an online banking brand
CIT describes Platinum Savings as an online account with access through online banking and its mobile app. There is no CIT branch network for customers who prefer to handle savings transactions in person.
That may not matter if you already keep a checking account at another institution. However, consumers who regularly use physical cash or value face-to-face banking will probably prefer a different setup.
Platinum Savings does not support Zelle®
CIT offers Zelle®, but Platinum Savings is not an eligible account. CIT currently limits Zelle enrollment to its Money Market and eChecking accounts.
Therefore, Platinum Savings works better as a dedicated savings vehicle than as an account for everyday person-to-person payments.
CIT-initiated ACH deposits can involve a five-business-day hold
If you initiate an ACH pull through CIT to bring money in from another bank, CIT's current funds-availability policy places a five-business-day hold on the deposited funds. This is separate from the time required for the transfer itself to move through the banking system.
For money you may need quickly, that distinction matters. One alternative is to initiate the ACH push from your other financial institution; under CIT's current policy, those funds become available when CIT receives them.
External-transfer dollar limits can vary
Although Platinum Savings currently allows unlimited monthly transactions, CIT can impose separate dollar limits on external transfers. Those limits may apply per transfer, per day, and over the preceding seven-day period.
Consequently, customers planning to move a particularly large balance should confirm their available transfer limit before they need the money elsewhere.
Who CIT Platinum Savings Is Best For
CIT Platinum Savings is best for someone who can comfortably keep at least $5,000 in savings and wants that entire balance to qualify for CIT's upper-tier APY.
It can be particularly useful for:
- A fully funded emergency reserve that normally stays well above $5,000.
- A house down payment or other major short-term savings goal.
- Savers who already have a separate checking account for spending and cash access.
- Customers who are comfortable managing transfers and deposits online.
- People who want a savings account without a monthly service fee.
You should probably skip Platinum Savings if your savings balance regularly falls below $5,000, you want the same APY regardless of balance, you need branch banking, or you want Zelle® directly from your savings account.

Crowd Work: What Real Users Are Saying
We reviewed public complaint platforms, customer-review sites, and personal-finance discussions to identify recurring patterns in how CIT Bank savings accounts perform outside the product page. These reports are anecdotal, so we did not treat a single review as representative. Instead, we looked for specific issues or benefits that appeared repeatedly and checked formal account rules against CIT's own disclosures.
The Positives: Where CIT Bank Shines
- Highlight: Platinum Savings appeals to rate-focused savers.Customers discussing Platinum Savings repeatedly point to the upper-tier yield as the reason they opened or kept the account. Some long-term users report that the account has worked without significant problems while providing a competitive place to hold larger cash balances.
Who It Benefits: Savers who primarily want to park cash, maintain the qualifying balance, and do not need frequent transaction-account features.
- Highlight: Routine online use can be uneventful.Although complaint sites naturally skew negative, consumer discussions also include CIT customers who say they have used the bank for years without major difficulties. Several describe normal website or transfer use once their accounts were established.
Who It Benefits: Digital-first customers with straightforward savings activity and established linked accounts.
The Fine Print: Common Customer Frustrations
- Gotcha: ACH availability can feel slower than expected.Multiple customers describe money appearing in their CIT balance while remaining unavailable for several business days. This pattern is consistent with CIT's own funds-availability policy, which currently places a five-business-day hold on ACH deposits that customers initiate through CIT from an external bank.
Workaround: If timing matters, review CIT's current availability rules and consider initiating an ACH push from the sending bank rather than pulling the deposit through CIT.
- Gotcha: Login and online-access complaints recur.Trustpilot, BBB complaints, and personal-finance discussions include repeated reports of failed logins, temporary access problems, or account restrictions. These experiences are not universal, but the pattern appears often enough to matter for a bank whose savings products are primarily managed online.
Workaround: Keep your phone number, email address, identification information, and linked-bank details current, and avoid making CIT your only source of immediately accessible cash.
- Gotcha: Security or verification reviews can be frustrating to resolve. Some customers report being asked for additional identity or external-account documentation after an account or transfer entered review. A recurring frustration is not necessarily that verification occurs, but that customers describe difficulty getting a clear timeline or escalating the issue quickly.
Workaround: Keep records showing ownership of linked accounts and maintain a separate checking or savings account for near-term expenses while any review is pending.
Platinum Savings makes the most sense when the account is used for its intended purpose: holding a sizable savings balance and earning interest rather than moving money in and out constantly. The combination of a competitive upper tier and no monthly service fee is attractive, but consumers who prioritize instant access, branch service, or seamless transfer timing should weigh the recurring operational complaints carefully.
Sources & Research Methodology

Consumer sources were used only to identify recurring experience patterns. Formal account terms, fees, transfer rules, interest mechanics, and FDIC information were verified separately using CIT Bank and FDIC sources.
CIT Platinum Savings Bottom Line
CIT Bank Platinum Savings is a strong option for savers who can comfortably maintain at least $5,000. The account combines a competitive upper-tier APY with no monthly service fee, a modest $100 opening requirement, daily compounding, and flexible online account management.
The $5,000 threshold is the deciding factor. Once your end-of-day balance falls below it, your entire balance earns the lower tier. Therefore, Platinum Savings is much less attractive for a smaller emergency fund or an account that you routinely draw down.
For someone keeping a larger, relatively stable cash reserve, Platinum Savings deserves consideration alongside other leading high-yield savings accounts. Savers who want a flat rate at lower balances should compare CIT Savings Connect and other no-tier alternatives before deciding.
CIT Platinum Savings FAQ
How much do you need to open a CIT Platinum Savings account?
CIT currently requires $100 to open Platinum Savings. However, opening the account and qualifying for its upper interest-rate tier are different requirements.
How much do you need to earn the higher CIT Platinum Savings APY?
You currently need an end-of-day balance of at least $5,000 to qualify for the upper-tier APY. When you qualify, the applicable rate is paid on your entire account balance.
What happens if CIT Platinum Savings falls below $5,000?
If your end-of-day balance falls below $5,000, your entire balance earns the account's lower-tier APY for that day. This is a lower interest rate, not a fee or withdrawal penalty.
Does CIT Platinum Savings have a monthly fee?
No. CIT currently charges no account-opening or monthly service fee for Platinum Savings. Transaction-specific charges can still apply to certain services, such as some outgoing domestic wires.
Is CIT Platinum Savings FDIC-insured?
Yes. CIT Bank is a division of First-Citizens Bank & Trust Company, an FDIC-insured institution. Eligible deposits are insured up to applicable limits by ownership category. Deposits held through CIT Bank and First Citizens are combined when calculating coverage because they are part of the same insured bank.
Can I transfer money from CIT Platinum Savings, and does it support Zelle®?
Yes, Platinum Savings supports electronic transfers, although CIT can apply external-transfer dollar limits. CIT-initiated ACH deposits from another bank are currently subject to a five-business-day availability hold. Platinum Savings itself is not eligible for Zelle®; CIT currently limits Zelle enrollment to Money Market and eChecking accounts.
CIT Platinum Savings Alternatives
CIT Savings Connect: Better if you do not want a $5,000 rate threshold
CIT Savings Connect is the most obvious alternative for someone who likes CIT Bank but does not expect to maintain $5,000 consistently. Savings Connect uses a simpler rate structure rather than Platinum Savings' two balance tiers.
That means there is no Platinum-style rate cliff when your balance moves below $5,000. On the other hand, Platinum Savings may offer the stronger rate when you comfortably qualify for its upper tier.
See our CIT Bank savings account review to compare Savings Connect and Platinum Savings side by side.
American Express High Yield Savings: Better for no minimum balance requirement
American Express® High Yield Savings is another online account with no monthly maintenance fee. Unlike Platinum Savings, American Express does not require a minimum opening deposit or a specific balance to qualify for its disclosed savings APY.
It may therefore fit better if your savings balance varies widely or if you want to start with less than $5,000 without dropping into a lower rate tier.

We’ve partnered with Allpoint to provide you with ATM access at any of the 55,000+ ATMs within the Allpoint network. You will not be charged a fee when using an in-network ATM, however, third-party fees
may be incurred when using out-of-network ATMs. SoFi’s ATM policies are subject to change at our discretion at any time.
6. Early Access to Direct Deposit Funds
Early access to direct deposit funds is based on the timing in which we receive notice of impending payment from the Federal Reserve, which is typically up to two days before the scheduled payment date, but may vary.
7. Overdraft Coverage
Overdraft Coverage is a feature automatically offered to SoFi Checking and Savings account holders who receive at least $1,000 or more in Eligible Direct Deposits within a rolling 31 calendar day period on a recurring basis. Eligible Direct Deposit is defined on the SoFi Bank Rate Sheet, available at https://www.sofi.com/legal/banking-rate-sheet. Members enrolled in Overdraft Coverage may be covered for up to $50 in negative balances on SoFi Bank debit card purchases only. Overdraft Coverage does not apply to P2P transfers, bill payments, checks, or other non-debit card transactions.
